classic patchwork backpack

This product is unavailable

Inspired by regional textile traditions and with an eye ever towards the colors, shapes and textures experienced during her hikes across the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, Amber designed the Patchwork Pack with the intention to create an equally utilitarian and stylish backpack for men and women; one that would hold up in all weather while hiking mountain trails or walking city streets.

“This is how you keep a traditional craft vibrant, dynamic, and relevant in a world of mass production. Each step is meditative and thoughtful; each finished piece a visual reflection of time, care and a love of place. What happens next, as the waxed canvas is marked by new travels and the pack relaxes into the form of it's new caretaker, inspires my imagination and the desire to create more.”

Inspired by bookmaking and origami techniques, waxed canvas is cut, creased with a bone folder and hand-sewn. Originally used for maritime purposes for its waterproof, durable and lightweight qualities, natural oils allow the canvas to age gracefully. The vegetable tanned leather is cut and riveted by hand. Water and stain-resistant merino wool felt is then cut into shapes and pieced together using quilting techniques, elevating the look of the typical canvas pack. The pack rolls up to reveal an interior pocket for laptops and a durable cotton canvas lining. Expandable side pockets include snap closures while the back includes padding for comfort. Shoulder straps have adjustable sliders with leather and canvas gussets at the base for strength.

Waxed Canvas was originally used for maritime purposes because—not only was it waterproof—it was durable and light. Oil is imbedded into the surface fibers, allowing the material to truly age gracefully.
